Shopping for Rehabilitation? ...... Know what to ask on your tour.

A lot of people these days are enjoying a renewed quality of life by discovering that they don't have to put up with the excruciating pain that accompanies having a bad knee or hip. As I turn the channels of my TV lately I see commercials for new knee replacement joints that will last for 30 years. This is surely a great thing and here at Maplewood we have become very good at helping patients heal from the surgery and transition with the proper therapy to a full recovery.

Heathcare Reform Implementation - Impacts on Small Business

Employers with 10 or fewer full-time-equivalent employees, who each earn less than $25,000 a year on average, will be eligible for a tax credit of 35% of health insurance costs. The tax credit which helps offset the cost of providing healthcare coverage to employees, increases to 50% of costs for the first two years a company buys insurance through SHOP exchanges.

Forgotten Again - Post Acute Care & Long Term Care

When I was a kid, both my Father and Grandfather would often use the line "you get what you pay for". Back then I didnt understand quite what that all meant but as time has gone on I have come to understand more and more the acuracy of this expression. When you look at the services provided in a post hospital setting like Maplewood, what you "get" is a lot. Unfortunately the fact that Healthcare decisions are more and more falling out of the hands of the consumer and into the hands of the politician is causing us as a facility to look at withdrawing from the Governmet sponsored Medicare and Medicaid systems.

2010 - A Rough Ride for Nursing Homes in the Medicaid Program

It was 1984 when the popular TV show was Hill Street Blues. The top movie was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. You could buy a Dodge Ram 50 truck new for $8,900 and a gallon of gas was $1.10. It was the same year that our current Medicaid rate at Maplewood is based upon. For all the Nursing Homes that have been bought, sold or built since 1984 there has been a situation where the year of their transfer was the year they became locked in time for Medicaid payment purposes.

If you are like me you are wondering exactly what we ended up with when the Healthcare debate finally ended with a "Yes" vote last month. Here is some plain language information on what it will mean to business as we move through the next couple of years.

New Electronic Medical Record System arrives at Maplewood

If you have had the misfortune of needing the services of the hospital emergency department lately you will have noticed a few changes. Paper is pretty much a thing of the past in that everything about you now runs through a Palm or laptop and flows into the hospital database. Everyone works from that database as they add information about you and refer to your medical record for information.

On Wednesday, March 3, 2010 the New York State survey team walked into Maplewood. This is the final year that the surveyors will be using the current survey system. Next year there will be a whole new way in which they incorporate new technology to review a building.

New York State budget proposal means trouble for facilities and Higher taxes on care

Governor Patterson recently released his 2010-2011 NYS budget. Within the proposed budget we are seeing more cuts in Medicaid reimbursement and more taxes for those who pay for care out of their own pockets. A proposed 1% increase in the nursing home assessment tax will make it that much more difficult for consumers to afford the cost of care. These fees represent a gross receipts tax on nursing homes and as such go right to the state coffers.
